Job applications: understand the dos and don'ts
Session C1: Saturday, 30 August, 9:15 - 12:15 | focus on non-academic positions or Session C2: Saturday, 30 August, 14:15 - 17:15 | focus on academic positions
Room: 242B
As you look for a suitable job you must stand out from the crowd of other well-qualified job-seekers to attract the attention of potential employers. During this workshop you will:
- learn how to identify and present the specific skills you have acquired during your thesis and/or post doc;
- hear about the importance of tailoring your application to different types of jobs;
- learn how to write an attractive CV and engaging cover letter;
- learn how to prepare for and present yourself convincingly in an interview;
- and how networking can help you find out about potential careers, as well as available jobs.
One month before the conference, you will be asked to send your CV and an application for a mock job; these will be used in the practical exercises during the workshop.
The morning workshop will focus more on non-academic positions and complements the Career Options Lunch session: we recommend that participants who are considering a career outside academia sign-up to both session C1 and the career options lunch.
The afternoon session will focus more on academic positions.
Although the focus will be different, the general principles presented are similar in the two sessions, we would therefore not recommend signing up to both C1 and C2.
